"the Future of Desire"
excerpted from student essay

Just a brief missive from the bottom of the huge stack of papers I have to finish. At the moment I have well over 500 hundred pages of student writing to grade as well as preparing for class. By next monday, you can add another 27 exam booklets to the general tally.

The student who wrote this phrase meant to write "my desired future", but I rather like what she came up with instead. The idea that my desire has a future all its own. Somehow it sounded to me like the title of a Henry James novel.

I'm not sure about the future of my desire. I'm beginning to think that David has the right idea with shipping me off to France.
